Welcome to Sebec Lake
This site is dedicated to exploring the story of Sebec Lake, Maine. Every place is shaped by the intersection of nature and humanity. The many intersections define it's history and natural history. These stories define it as it is today. Times change, people come and go, nothing ever stays the same - if we don't remember these stories, they will be lost. Our goal is to share the story of the people and the lake.
Like most of the Maine North Woods, Sebec Lake's story has been shaped by extensive use by humans. During the last 200 years its shores have played host to Abenaki villages, commercial fisheries, fish hatcheries, narrow gaugue railways, factories, extensive timber harvests, great forest fires, wilderness resort hotels, a hydroelectic dam, agriculture, homes, vacation camps, a state park, and many, many other things.
The lake is currently a popular tourist and sporting destination. It has an excellent cold water fishery and one of the only native landloack salmon and lake trout fisheries in the state. It covers 6,803 acres with the deepest point reaching 155 feet. It borders four towns in Piscatiquis County, Bowerbank, Willamantic, Sebec, and Dover-Foxcroft. We've been connected to the west end of the Lake for many years and many generations and we hope you enjoy the story we share. It is by no means complete, if you'd like to contribute to the story please let us know.
